How a service call works
Most electrical problems have a specific cause. The job is to find it, say what it is, fix it properly and prove the fix.
Assess
We start at the symptom and work back: which circuit, which devices, what changed recently. Measurements come before opinions, so voltage, current and continuity get checked with a meter rather than assumed.
Explain
You get the finding in plain language: what failed, why it failed and what the options are. Where there is a choice between a repair and a replacement, you see the trade-off before anything is decided.
Repair
The work is done to the Ontario Electrical Safety Code with the right wire gauge, breaker rating and device type for the circuit. Connections are torqued, boxes are filled within limits and labels are updated.
Test
Before we leave, the circuit is loaded and re-measured. A repair is only finished when the readings say so and the panel directory reflects what is actually connected.
What is behind the cover
A panel tells you a lot once it is open: how circuits are loaded, whether conductors are sized to their breakers, and whether anything has been running hot. These photos show what we look at.

Common questions
Short answers to what North York homeowners ask most. Longer explanations are on the service pages.
Why does a breaker keep tripping?
Usually one of four things: the circuit is overloaded (a space heater and a microwave on one 15 A kitchen circuit will do it), there is a short or ground fault, an AFCI or GFCI breaker is detecting a real fault or an incompatible device, or the breaker itself is worn. Resetting it repeatedly does not fix any of these. How we find the cause.
Is a 100 A panel enough?
For many North York houses, yes, until you add an EV charger, a heat pump, an induction range or a second suite. A load calculation under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code gives a real answer for your house. If the panel is full of tandem breakers, that is a capacity sign on its own. Panel upgrades explained.
Does electrical work in Ontario need a permit?
Most work beyond replacing a like-for-like device needs a notification filed with the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA), which then inspects it. Panel changes, new circuits and EV charger installs are all in that category. The licensed contractor files it as part of the job.
An outlet stopped working but no breaker tripped. Why?
Often a GFCI elsewhere on the same circuit has tripped (check bathrooms, kitchen, garage and outside). Otherwise it is usually a loose connection upstream, frequently a backstabbed wire in another outlet box. That is a heat risk, so it is worth having looked at rather than left.
Why do LED lights flicker or buzz on a dimmer?
Most often the dimmer is an older incandescent type that cannot control LED drivers properly, or the LEDs are not rated for dimming. Matching the dimmer to the lamp load fixes it in most cases. Flicker across many fixtures at once can point to a loose neutral, which is a different and more urgent problem.
Can you add pot lights to a finished ceiling?
Yes in most cases. In insulated ceilings the housings must be IC-rated, and the circuit load and box fill are checked before cutting anything. We discuss layout and switching first so the result is what you expect.
